Evaluation

Final Film Cut

Our final film shows improvement from our rough cut, the changes we made was that we made a soundtrack for the full film. The sounds are used to enhance the film, to cause a tense effect and to create suspense. We also added effects to the film to cause it to look a lot darker with low key lighting to help show the effects of a horror film. We also added and created the credits and logo into the film to make it look more to a professional standard. We also made sure that all of the shots were more fluent and smoother.

Rough Cut

After finishing our rough cut we got some of our follow peers to give us feedback on our film so far. Some of the feed back that we received was that we needed to add some sound effects and music in order to enhance the horror feeling. We were also advised to add effects into the film to make the visual effect more dark to keep in with the horror conventions.

Preliminery Task

While making the preliminary task we were told to include the 180 degree rule, match on action and shot reverse shot. We found that we included all of these in our film but we did struggle while filming as it was the first time we had ever used the equipment while concentrating on using the correct camera shots. We found that our overall film was successful for the task that was set but was very simple and not very advanced.

Initial Ideas!

Ideas - Blair Witch Project

This picture is took from the film The Blair Witch Project. This shot is to show that someone has died but you don't know who the murderer is, this is what helped us create our idea for our film as we decided to use aspects from this film as we didn't want the audience to see who the killer was, to leave them questioning and in suspence.

Ideas - Shrooms

This shot is from the film Shrooms, this shows the girl running though the woods. This shot inspried us as this is what we wanted our film to visually look like, as this long shot shows the darkness of the woods and creates a 'scary' atomosphere which is what we want the audience to feel.

Ideas - Shrooms

This trailer is for the horror film Shrooms, which is where we mainly collected most of ideas from. We liked the idea of a group of young people going into the woods and everything turning into a nightmare. This horror film influenced our film as we took the idea of taking drugs but changed it in our own unique way so that there is no obvious killer.

Opening Sequence Timeline

This timeline was from the opening scene of the horror film The Shining. On here I wrote down the exact second when different credits appear, when the music changed and what effects are used. I also put down when the camera shots change and the different angles. This showed us exactly what a professional opening scene looks like.

Nine Screen Analysis of an Opening Sequence

Assessment 2 - Genre History Research

Audience and Genre Research

Assessment 3- Audience and genre research

Target Audience Research
The BBFC is an independant company which have classified cinema films since 1912, when the company was first set up. The certificates are U, PG, 12, 15, and 18 and these are given to films depending on what the movie contains. The certificates which I will be looking at are the 15 rating and 18 rating.

15 Rated Films

15 rated films are only suitable for a person who is 15 years and over. No one under this age boundary can go view a 15 rated film at the cinema or rent or buy a 15 rated movie. The target audience for a 15 rated film is obviously for people who are 15 years of age or older which clearly eliminates the younger audience, i.e pre-teens. The criteria producers have to consider when producing a 15 rated film are:

  • Discrimination
  • Drugs
  • Horror
  • Imitatable behaviour
  • Language
  • Nudity
  • Sex
  • Theme
  • Violence
18 Rated Films
18 rated films are suitable for people who are 18 years of age or older, therefore they are for adults only. No one younger than the age of 18 may watch an 18 rated movie at the cinema or buy/rent an 18 rated film. An 18 rated film can contain pratically anything, but there are certain guidelines a producer has to follow before producing an 18 rated film.
Horror Genre Research
Horror films are movies that strive the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Many horror movies also include a central villain. Early horror movies are largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. More recent horror films often draw inspiration from the insecurities of life after World War II, giving rise to the three distinct sub-genres: the horror of personality, the horror of armageddon, and the horror of the demonic.
